A Bundle of Elements!

Now that I have a few related products on Teachers Pay Teachers, I have put together a bundle! It includes the Elements Dictionary, for introducing the six elements; Song From the Year I Was Born booklet to put those elements into action, and a Jeopardy style game to solidify their knowledge.

Elements of Music Dictionary

This resource is jammed packed of graphic organizers to assist in teaching the elements--what makes music, music--to grades 1 through 8. The pages are duo-tang friendly (no loss of material when put in folders or binders), with a front and back and extra doodle space. There is a blank set (just the elements listed), and a lined set so you can have students define different components of each elements if your plans are different. Then there's separate organizers for primary, junior and intermediate divisions as they each have different aspects of each element to learn about. There is also separate answer keys for each division.

Analyze a Song From the Year You Were Born

This resource guides students into putting the elements into action. Using the guiding questions, students will examine a song from the year they were born (SFTY). All questions for grades 4-8 are on each page (with no grade distinction), so the teacher can assign which questions meets their students' needs/level. There is also a page for why they chose the song, a melody map, and their final critical analysis. Students will learn what the beats per minute of the song is, as well as other elements that make it distinct, such as what the timbre is, the type of texture, the key signature etc. This booklet can be used as its own unit (approximately 8-10 classes), or used throughout the year as the different elements are examined. It is a great resource to leave for a sub or supply teacher!

Elements of Music "Jeoparty" Game

This Google Slides game is geared for students in grades 7-8, but would also be fun for grade 6s (there's a couple Texture questions they might not know yet). It could be played as a whole class activity, breaking the class into teams. Have one student be the timer (20 seconds should be enough), and 1 student be the record keeper.  It could also be done in small groups. With 30 questions, this will easily take up an entire 60 minute class! Each of the six elements is a category, and questions range from defining terms to clapping rhythms. A cowbell or tambourine makes a great substitute for a buzzer!

Each of these products are usually $4.00, but purchased as a bundle, they are only $9 for all 3! Any one of these will meet the Ontario music curriculum Overall Expectation of  C2 (Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing) and the Song From the Year I was Born also meets C3 Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts.

If you're wondering what the elements of music are, or why they're so important, check out my blog post, Teaching the Elements of Music.
