I love helping new music teachers--often teachers with no music background that have been given a coverage position that includes music. This happens a lot in Ontario! I often see posts by these teachers in Facebook groups, desperate for any help. I LOVE helping these teachers!
Usually I start with explaining about the elements of music that are in the curriculum. These can be scary when you don't know what they mean. That's why I've written several posts so far, and have more planned. I also have resources in my TPT store on teaching about the elements and I'm starting to add lessons for specific elements.
Once you've got your head wrapped around the six elements, the next step is to learn what to teach each year. You might be teaching only 2 grades in the school and you don't know what they should have learned, and you want to make sure they'll be ready for the next year. The Overall and Specific Expectations are the same from year to year--it's the elements that change.
I have created a free resource to help! Yes, you can flip through the Ontario Arts Curriculum document...however, it covers all four arts strands! I would find myself distracted and forget what I was looking for. I needed a stand alone document. The Ontario Music Educators' Association (OMEA) has a document (I think you need to be a member), which lists all the elements and their breakdowns on the left, and the grades along the top. Check marks show which grades a concept gets introduced in. This is good for looking at a specific concept, but not so great for looking at one grade at a time. My resource is broken down by grades first, and includes what's new and what they should have already covered.
Also, I designed these on my "Duo-tang friendly pages", so when you insert into a Duo-tang or a binder, you don't lose any of the info!
